Creation of “Eat with caution” – Photoshop Tutorial

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

My latest creation “Eat with caution” was created using Photoshop CS4. It is possible to create this image in Photoshop Elements as well, you will just have to use the alternative masking method which you can learn on the layers and their masks tutorial on this website.

Other tutorials that may help you are cloning and healing, Texture blending, The liquify filter (contained within the tutorial linked) and adjustment layers (contained within the tutorial linked).

If you already have an understanding of these tools / techniques then carry on reading.

I have seen images created using food and giving then mouths before but I wanted a slight twist. I wanted to have someone actually holding the food. This would make it more of a challenge to find the right starting image but would give the image more impact. The final image has 2 ravenous cherries being held a safe distance at arms length. You wouldn’t want to get to close to these guys after all.

Creating Paths with the Pen tool in Photoshop CS

Monday, April 26th, 2010

The following tutorial works with Photoshop CS. It does not work with Photoshop Elements.

There are many advantages to Photoshop CS (Creative Suite) over Photoshop Elements. This is mainly because Photoshop Elements is geared towards photo editing while CS has many other uses. One of its advantages is creating paths with the pen tool. This is very handy for people that make a lot of cut outs (such as graphic designers) because it allows you to make a very precise path around any object and then use this path in several ways. These include turning your path into a selection as well as making it a clipping path.

Clipping paths are useful because they can be outputted with the file in certain formats such as TIFF and EPS. These can then be opened in page layout programs such as InDesign and Quark and the path can be used to only show the subject and leave the background transparent. These are popular in companies that have a lot of product shots in there image library. It means you don’t have to create second versions of images with backgrounds to match your works background as well as allowing the designer to create montages of the images without having to do it in Photoshop. In short it makes things a lot simpler and faster.

This tutorial will show you how to create a path using the pen tool, then how make this path a clipping path as well as turn the path into a selection.

Isolating subjects on a white background in Photoshop

Friday, November 6th, 2009

This tutorial will show you how to place the main subject of a picture onto a white background using photoshop. These sorts of images are very popular with graphic designers because they can easily work the image around text in an article. It also puts the entire focus of the image onto the subject.

To do this tutorial you will need to already understand the following Photoshop techniques.
Layers and masks
Selection tools

This tutorial will work in both the full version of Photoshop as well as Elements.

Open up your image in Photoshop

white BG 1

Double click the background layer, a window will appear, click OK. This is to stop it being a background layer. Create a new layer beneath your subject layer and fill it in white.
